Large Earthquake Triggering, Clustering, and the Synchronization of Faults

چکیده

Large earthquakes are sometimes observed to trigger other large earthquakes on nearby faults. The magnitudes of the calculated Coulomb stress transfers presumed to cause the triggering are 10 –10 3 of the earthquake stress drops. The earthquake stress drops and the triggering delay times are similarly small with respect to the natural recurrence time of the earthquakes. This requires that both faults be simultaneously very close to the ends of their seismic cycles. Paleoseismological data show that for the same regions prior earthquakes have occurred in clusters of ruptures of several faults separated by long quiescent periods. Both observations suggest that synchronization is occurring between faults. Theory and observations indicate that synchronization can occur between nearby faults with positive stress coupling and intrinsic slip velocities within an entrainment threshold. In the south Iceland seismic zone, the central Nevada seismic belt, and the eastern California shear zone, several synchronous clusters that apparently act independently can be recognized. This behavior is the 3D equivalent of the phase locking that results in the seismic cycle of individual faults being dominated by large characteristic earthquakes, and for synchronization of fault segments along a given fault. Rupture patterns of repeated individual earthquakes or earthquake clusters are not identical in either the 2D or 3D cases. The state of this system, which exhibits strong indications of synchronywithout exact repetition, may be called fuzzy synchrony.

Stress triggering in thrust and subduction earthquakes and stress interaction between the southern San Andreas and nearby thrust and strike-slip faults

[1] We argue that key features of thrust earthquake triggering, inhibition, and clustering can be explained by Coulomb stress changes, which we illustrate by a suite of representative models and by detailed examples. Whereas slip on surface-cutting thrust faults drops the stress in most of the adjacent crust, slip on blind thrust faults increases the stress on some nearby zones, particularly ab...

Anthropogenic Triggering of Large Earthquakes

The physical mechanism of the anthropogenic triggering of large earthquakes on active faults is studied on the basis of experimental phenomenology, i.e., that earthquakes occur on active tectonic faults, that crustal stress values are those measured in situ and, on active faults, comply to the values of the stress drop measured for real earthquakes, that the static friction coefficients are tho...

Splay Faults in the Makran Subduction Zone and Changes of their Transferred Coulomb Stress

The Makran subduction zone in northeast and the Sumatra subduction zone (Sunda) in the west have been known as tsunamigenic zones of the Indian Ocean. The 990 km long Makran subduction zone is located offshore of Iran, Pakistan and Oman. Similar to many subduction zones all over the world, the Makran accretionary prism is associated with an imbricate of thrust faults across the zone, which may ...

Insights into the Aftershocks and Inter-Seismicity for Some Large Persian Earthquakes

This paper focuses on aftershocks behavior and seismicity along some co-seismic faults for large earthquakes in Iran. The data of aftershocks and seismicity roughly extracted from both the Institute of Geophysics the University of Tehran (IGUT) and International Seismological Center (ISC) catalogs. Apply some essential methods on 43 large earthquakes data; like the depth, magnitude as well as t...
